‘Fix It Cafe’ in Stockton supports Great Big Green Week

There’s a great opportunity for the public to get items fixed for free this weekend when a Fix It Cafe opens for business as part of Great Big Green Week.

The cafe will be open at the Institute of Thrifty Ideas based at 9 Silver Street in Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 1SX from 11 am- 3 pm on Saturday, June 15th.

The event has been set up by the organisers who bring the region the Festival of Thrift every year and held at their base in Stockton.

Visitors can get their fix of fixing and repairing for free with no need to book.

They can simply drop in with something to fix and experienced fixers will help –  from kitchen appliances, analogue electronics, hi-fi’s, garden tools, cameras and more – although mobiles and screens cannot be repaired.

The event has been organised to mark the closure of Great Big Green Week this weekend which has celebrated action being taken on climate change across the UK with more than 4,500 events being held.

This year, the theme of the annual event has been celebrating swaps – from clothes or book swaps to skill swaps in allotments or upcycling workshops, to knowledge swaps on discussion panels or wildlife reserves.

In the case of the Fix It Cafe, it’s swapping the decision to throw something in the bin, to deciding to keep it and extend its useful life through recycling or sustainability.

Events are hosted by teachers, bus drivers, sport clubs, artists, community groups, places of worship, libraries, builders – anyone who cares about climate change.

Meanwhile Local Green Weeks – Great Big Green Week community hubs – celebrate local activity, raise the profile of climate change and show why it is relevant to the community and local decision makers.

The Festival of Thrift has helped act as one of those community hubs, part of its goal of providing all-year round support rather focusing purely on the festival itself, which is held in the autumn.

This year, the Festival of Thrift will be held in Billingham for the second year in a row, and is due to take place over the weekend of September 21st and 22nd.
