Consultation starts on Durham’s Conservation Area Management Plan

PEOPLE across County Durham are being invited to have their say on the Conservation Area Management Plan (CAMP) for Durham City.
Durham County Council has launched a consultation on the city’s CAMP which is set to run for eight weeks.
The management plan reinforces the special architectural and historic interest of the city, while identifying issues, problems and threats to that special interest and offers solutions and opportunities for enhancement.
The Durham City CAMP consists of a strategic overview, seven appraisals of the city’s character, and an overarching management strategy.

These have all been amended thanks to feedback from residents in two earlier public consultations in 2024 and 2025.
In addition, the council has produced a new document which serves as an appendix to the CAMP and will help shape current and future planning policies relating to the World Heritage Site in terms of active management and conservation.

This is the first time the full CAMP has been presented for comment and once it has been adopted it will be used to deliver positive change, shape future developments and help make planning decisions.
Coun Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for leisure, tourism, regeneration and high street, said: “We encourage everyone to get in touch and give their views on the management plan. We can then make sure it serves Durham City effectively, efficiently and in the best interests of residents.
“The Conservation Area Management Plan will be vital for protecting and enhancing the history of the city and ensuring it can be appreciated for generations to come”
People can have their say by completing an online survey form.
