Climate change Snow Queen to melt the heart this Christmas at Stockton Arts Centre
The Snow Queen – a story of climate change to warm the hearts of young children across County Durham and Tees Valley – is being held at The Stockton Arc all the way through to Christmas Eve this week.
The quirky drama retells the classic story with a modern twist, centring on Lumi, a young girl who gazes up at the stars and worries about the world in a way that 2023 audiences can relate to.
The adults don’t seem to have noticed that the seasons aren’t behaving. The world is getting warmer. That it hasn’t snowed for years.
So, realising this is an emergency, Lumi decides to go right to the top, to the Snow Queen she has heard so much about, to see if she can solve the problem.
Along the way, she’ll meet a host of fabulous new friends – from an overworked elf to a pompous polar bear – as she learns that small changes make a big difference! But first, she is determined to make it SNOW!
The show is suitable for youngsters from three upwards, with the climate-friendly message:
“Small changes make a big difference, and young voices speak the loudest truth”.
Louise Wilkins, deputy marketing manager at Stockton ARC, says ARC is delighted to be staging the production by Leeds-based theatre company Wrongsemble.
She said: “Our family Christmas show this year is a vibrant musical re-telling of The Snow Queen by the brilliant Wrongsemble, who specialise in working with and creating work for young people, schools, and families.
“This production gives the classic tale a modern environmental twist and explores themes of climate change, loneliness, kindness, and asking questions.
“It’s a lovely, magical family show full of music and adventure.”
